Willy Ronis

Paris Photo Daily #143

Willy Ronis | 1955

This nighttime photograph by Willy Ronis captures the vibrant atmosphere of Bastille Day celebrations in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district of Paris.

Willy Ronis (1910-2009) was one of France's great humanist photographers, alongside contemporaries like Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson. After beginning his career in the 1930s, Ronis developed a distinctive style that celebrated everyday Parisian life with warmth and authenticity. His work often focused on working-class neighborhoods, street scenes, and intimate moments of daily life.

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés area was the intellectual and artistic heart of post-war Paris, home to existentialist philosophers, jazz clubs, and literary cafés. This 1955 image captures both a national celebration and the neighborhood's unique character during a pivotal period when Paris was recovering from war and embracing new cultural movements. The casual elegance of the couple and the lively café scene embody the spirit of liberation and renewal that characterized this era.

La Galerie Rouge, in the Marais, has a Willy Ronis exhibition through May 17. Visit their website HERE.
