Willem van de Poll
Paris Photo Daily #38
Willem van de Poll | Rue Montmartre | 1960
This street scene (Rue Montmartre) is the work of Willem van de Poll (1895-1970), one of the Netherlands' most distinguished photographers of the 20th century. While van de Poll is perhaps best known as the official photographer of the Dutch royal house from the 1940s to the late 1950s, his career was remarkably diverse, spanning photojournalism, fashion, and documentary work across Europe.
After starting his career in 1920 with the Berliner Tageblatt, he worked with prestigious agencies like the Associated Press and Black Star, traveling extensively to capture images like this Parisian market scene.
His vast archive of over 30,000 photographs was later donated to the Nationaal Archief, preserving his significant contribution to 20th-century photography.
