The Carousel - Corinne Cobabe

Paris Photo Daily #20

The Carousel - Corinne Cobabe - 2001

A Belle Époque carousel stands in the shadow of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris's Montmartre district. The ornate merry-go-round, with its decorative horses and elaborate rococo-style panels, creates a striking contrast against the basilica's distinctive Romano-Byzantine domes rising in the background.

I went to Paris in April of 2001 to celebrate my 30th birthday. It was a cold and dreary day, which is probably why there were not many people around the carousel. I loved the contrast between the playful carousel and the starkness of the Sacré-Cœur.

At the time I took this photo, I was just beginning my professional photography journey. While working for a wedding photographer, I took fine art photography printing classes at a local community college. This photo is extra special as it’s the first one I showed publicly and also the first one I sold.
