Café, Paris - Saul Leiter

Paris Photo Daily #7

Saul Leiter was an early pioneer of color photography, renowned for his captivating images of the streets near his Manhattan home. One of his most significant works, showcasing his celebrated style, is a 1959 photograph of a Parisian café. Taken through a window—a technique he often used—the glass reflects subtle images of the street outside, including a partial reflection of Leiter himself. The image's soft, pastel-like tones, achieved partly by using expired Kodachrome film, give it a beautiful, painting-like quality, reflecting his deep interest in the medium.
