Philipa Daria

Paris Photo Daily #139

Philipa Daria

This image by Philipa Daria, a contemporary artist and photographer based in Paris, shows the unique lens through which she sees Paris. In this case, capturing a playful moment, the innocence of childhood, with a cliché red beret against the backdrop of La Grande Dame, the Eiffel. It is a game, a challenge to find a fresh take on this iconic monument.

Originally from Toronto with Polish and Ukrainian roots, Daria moved to Paris in 2014 after a career in engineering, followed by a switch to teaching physics in Canada. She currently teaches math at the American School of Paris. When she first arrived, she brought students to lunch duty to the Trocadéro gardens across the Seine from Eiffel.

Her journey, shaped by childhood visits to Poland and Ukraine, her love of the arts as well as science, fuels her passion for capturing nuances in landscapes and interactions. At times mixing colour with black and white, in others blending photos or sketches with photos.

The Eiffel Tower is an iconic symbol of Parisian elegance, as well as an engineering marvel - the perfect blend of a je ne sais quoi that never fails to draw crowds.

Paris continues to thrive as a cultural hub, where historic sites inspire modern creativity, and artists like Daria connect past and present through their work.
