Paris Photo Daily #129

Paul Almásy | 1960

This 1960 photograph of Les Halles, Paris’s historic wholesale market, was captured by Hungarian-born photographer Paul Almásy, who documented the city’s daily life for decades. Known as the "belly of Paris," Les Halles was a bustling hub where vendors sold fresh produce in iconic iron-and-glass pavilions designed by Victor Baltard.

In 1960, Paris was experiencing postwar growth, but the market’s days were numbered—it would be relocated to Rungis by 1971 as the city modernized.
