Marcel Louchet | Rue de la Paix | 1948-1950

This atmospheric view of Rue de la Paix (1948-1950) is one of the rediscovered works of Marcel Louchet, a mysterious figure in French photography whose portfolio was only recently unearthed.

Working from his studio at 5, rue de la Voûte in Paris, Louchet created powerful documentation of post-war Paris that remained largely unknown until a collection of hundreds of his prints emerged in recent years.

This image, characteristic of his style, demonstrates his masterful capture of light and shadow and his keen eye for urban composition.

While Louchet's biography remains enigmatic, his work places him firmly among the great humanist photographers of post-war France. However, he never achieved recognition from contemporaries like Doisneau or Boubat during his lifetime. His photographs, including this one, were featured in a notable exhibition at Galerie Graphem in Paris in 2017, titled 'Paris des années 1950.
