Keystone France

Paris Photo Daily #52

With ice skating season in full swing at Paris's temporary rinks, I was reminded of this photograph from the Keystone Photo Agency archives. Captured on a frigid December day (likely in the late 1940s, judging by the clothing and cars), it shows a playful couple who turned the frozen fountain at Boulevard Saint-Michel into their own impromptu skating rink.

The dome of the Panthéon provides a quintessentially Parisian backdrop as they dance on ice in front of the Luxembourg Gardens. What I love about this image is how it captures a moment of joyous fun during what must have been a particularly cold winter in post-war Paris, proving that Parisians have always known how to make the most of winter's gifts.
