Julie Peiffer | 2018
This black-and-white photograph, taken in 2018 by Julie Peiffer, captures a quiet evening at Café des Deux Moulins on Rue Lepic in Montmartre, Paris’s 18th arrondissement.
Peiffer, a self-taught French artist-photographer born in Nancy, began her career in magazine journalism, working closely with photographers in cities like Paris, New York, and London, before turning to photography in 2015 after the Charlie Hebdo attacks.
Her work, which explores themes like the invisibility of women and urban spaces, has been exhibited internationally since 2017, with collectors in France, Canada, Dubai, and Australia.
In this image, Café des Deux Moulins—famous for its role in the 2001 film Amélie—glows warmly with its neon sign as patrons gather outside on the terrace, framed by classic Parisian architecture and a cobbled stone street.
In 2018, Paris navigated the tensions of the Yellow Vest protests, yet Montmartre’s café culture, tied to its artistic legacy, remained a haven for connection, a spirit Peiffer beautifully preserves with her cinematic lens.
