Paris Photo Daily #71

Gail Albert Halaban | Bis Rue de Douai, Paris, 9E | 2013
This image is from Gail Albert Halaban's acclaimed series "Paris Views" (2013). The series explores the unique relationship between Parisians and their windows, offering a respectful glimpse into private moments within the city's distinctive Haussmanian architecture.
The photograph captures a quintessential Parisian roofscape with its characteristic zinc-clad mansard roofs, dormer windows, and forest of chimneys. Through the illuminated windows, we see intimate yet staged moments of domestic life - notably a figure in the central window, with bookshelves visible in the adjacent space. The composition masterfully balances the geometric patterns of the architecture with these human elements.
What makes Halaban's work particularly interesting is that, unlike traditional "voyeuristic" photography, she collaborates with her subjects. For her Paris series, she worked with residents who agreed to be photographed, transforming what could be seen as intrusive into a cooperative artistic endeavor. This approach began with her earlier New York series "Out My Window" and evolved further in Paris.
The artist, who studied at the Yale School of Art, is known for exploring urban life and the connections between people living in close proximity yet often separated by physical and social barriers. Her Paris project, supported by the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès, examines how Parisians navigate privacy and community in their densely populated city.
This particular image, taken in the 9th arrondissement on May 19, 2013, exemplifies her technique of shooting at dusk or in the early evening when interior lights create a cinematic quality that recalls Edward Hopper's paintings. The result is both documentary and theatrical, capturing the poetry of everyday life while questioning our role as observers in an increasingly interconnected world.
The work addresses universal themes of urban isolation and connection, privacy, and exposure while specifically addressing Paris's unique architectural and social fabric. Halaban creates an intimate and respectful meditation on modern city life through carefully orchestrated scenes.
