Paris Photo Daily #32
Frank Paulin | 1962
Frank Paulin (1926-2016) was an important American photographer who began his photographic education at age 16 as an apprentice at Chicago's Whittaker-Christiansen Studio. His documentary style was significantly developed during his service in the Army Signal Corps in Europe during WWII, where he photographed wartime devastation.
After the war, Paulin studied under notable photographers, including Harry Callahan and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, at the Institute of Design in Chicago. He made history in 1957 as the first artist to have a solo exhibition at Helen Gee's Limelight Gallery, which was the only gallery dedicated to art photography in New York City at that time. His work is now held in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Yale University Art Gallery.
