Rue Chanoinesse | Charles Cushman | 1960
Rue Chanoinesse is a charming medieval street on Île de la Cité, one of Paris's oldest neighborhoods. Dating back to the 12th century, this narrow lane runs beside Notre Dame Cathedral and offers visitors a glimpse into what Paris looked like during the Middle Ages (for example, the intersecting street, Rue des Chantres).
The street got its name from the canons or clergyman (chanoine in French) who lived there while serving at Notre Dame. Today, it's home to some of Paris's oldest buildings, including number 24, which features a preserved wooden spiral staircase from the 15th century. The quiet, atmospheric street feels like a secret passage through time, away from the tourist crowds that flock to nearby Notre Dame.
