Auguste Léon

Paris Photo Daily #47

Auguste Léon | 1918 | 54 Rue Basfroi

This is a colorized photograph by Auguste Leon that captures daily life on Rue Basfroi in 1918. Street vendors, with their wooden carts, line the cobblestone street, selling what appears to be produce and other goods. The storefronts show the classic Parisian architecture of the era, with signs advertising "Boutellerie" (bottle shop) and "Tabac."

What caught my eye was number 54 Rue Basfroi, at the end of the block. Today, it houses La Fee Verte, one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. It's fascinating to see this corner of the 11th arrondissement over a century ago, knowing I now sit in that same space sipping coffee where Parisians of the Belle Époque once stood. These glimpses into Paris's past make every visit to these historic establishments feel like stepping through time.
