André Ostier - Jeune Vitrier

Paris Photo Daily #157

André Ostier | Jeune Vitrier | c.1955

This black-and-white photograph by André Ostier, titled Jeune Vitrier (Young Glazier), was taken circa 1955 on Rue Greneta in Paris’s 2nd arrondissement.

Ostier, a French photographer known for his work in fashion and street photography, captured the essence of mid-20th-century Paris, from high society for Vogue to the city’s working class, as seen here.

The image shows a young glazier with his ladder and glass panes, standing on the street in front of the weathered Hôtel du Nord, its peeling walls marked by faded ads and graffiti.

Rue Greneta, in the Sentier district, was a hub for artisans in the 1950s, a time when Paris, during the Trente Glorieuses, was rebuilding after the war.

Ostier’s photograph captures the grit and resilience of this era, blending documentary realism with a poetic touch, reflecting a city in transition.
